Medical Terms Associated with Lung Disease

A glossary of the medical terms and abbreviations associated with lung diseases

1. Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) and Pulmonary Fibrosis

These diseases generally involve inflammation, scarring, or other abnormalities of the lung's supporting tissue.

AbbreviationMedical Term
ILDInterstitial Lung Disease
IPFIdiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
PFPulmonary Fibrosis
PPFProgressive Pulmonary Fibrosis
CTD-ILDConnective Tissue Disease-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease
SSc-ILDSystemic Sclerosis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease
RA-ILDRheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease
HPHypersensitivity Pneumonitis
CHPChronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
NSIPNonspecific Interstitial Pneumonia
UIPUsual Interstitial Pneumonia (a pathological or imaging pattern)
COPCryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia
DIPDesquamative Interstitial Pneumonia
RB-ILDRespiratory Bronchiolitis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease
LIPLymphocytic Interstitial Pneumonia
AIPAcute Interstitial Pneumonia

2. Obstructive Lung Diseases

These conditions interfere with airflow through the bronchial tubes and smaller airways.

AbbreviationMedical Term
COPDChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
CBChronic Bronchitis
ACOAsthma-COPD Overlap
CFCystic Fibrosis
BEBronchiectasis
BOSBronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome
ABPAAllergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis
AERDAspirin-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease

Additional terms: Emphysema, asthma, and bronchiolitis are also important diagnostic terms, although they are commonly written without abbreviations.

3. Pulmonary Vascular Diseases

These involve blood vessels in the lungs and can seriously affect oxygen circulation.

AbbreviationMedical Term
PHPulmonary Hypertension
PAHPulmonary Arterial Hypertension
CTEPHChronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension
PEPulmonary Embolism
PVDPulmonary Vascular Disease
PVODPulmonary Veno-Occlusive Disease
PCHPulmonary Capillary Hemangiomatosis

4. Infectious and Inflammatory Lung Diseases

These include respiratory infections and conditions involving significant inflammation of lung tissue.

AbbreviationMedical Term
CAPCommunity-Acquired Pneumonia
HAPHospital-Acquired Pneumonia
VAPVentilator-Associated Pneumonia
TBTuberculosis
NTMNontuberculous Mycobacterial Lung Disease
MACMycobacterium Avium Complex
RSVRespiratory Syncytial Virus
ARDSAcute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
ALIAcute Lung Injury (historical term, now generally incorporated into ARDS classifications)
PJPPneumocystis Jirovecii Pneumonia

Additional term: Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect the lungs and other organs.

5. Lung Cancers and Tumors

These terms identify major forms of malignant disease affecting the lungs and surrounding tissues.

AbbreviationMedical Term
LCLung Cancer
NSCLCNon-Small Cell Lung Cancer
SCLCSmall Cell Lung Cancer
LUADLung Adenocarcinoma
LUSCLung Squamous Cell Carcinoma
MPMMalignant Pleural Mesothelioma
PNECPulmonary Neuroendocrine Carcinoma

6. Pulmonary Testing and Treatment Terminology

These abbreviations describe tests, measurements, treatments, or complications rather than individual diseases.

AbbreviationMedical Term
PFTPulmonary Function Test
FVCForced Vital Capacity
FEV1Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second
DLCODiffusing Capacity of the Lung for Carbon Monoxide
HRCTHigh-Resolution Computed Tomography
6MWTSix-Minute Walk Test
SpO2Peripheral Oxygen Saturation
PaO2Partial Pressure of Oxygen in Arterial Blood
O2Oxygen
LTOTLong-Term Oxygen Therapy
PRPulmonary Rehabilitation
CPAPContinuous Positive Airway Pressure
BiPAPBilevel Positive Airway Pressure
AE-IPFAcute Exacerbation of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
OSAObstructive Sleep Apnea
Understanding the terminology: IPF is a specific form of pulmonary fibrosis, while ILD is a much broader family of diseases. Not all interstitial lung diseases cause permanent fibrosis, and not all pulmonary fibrosis is idiopathic.

Educational reference only. Some abbreviations have multiple meanings depending on medical context. Diagnosis and treatment should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
